Ms. Liz Cohen

Welcome back Falcons! I’m excited to begin the second semester of 8th Grade Language Arts. We are going to have many challenges ahead of us for the remainder of the school year!

In the third nine weeks, we will explore the literary genres of informational and persuasive texts. In the informational unit, students will be introduced to research with a project teaching them about events that occurred during WWII. This will be followed by learning about the elements of a persuasive argument, finishing in a whole-class debate.

To close the year, students will immerse themselves in the drama of The Diary of Anne Frank.  We will then culminate our time together with a project displaying what we’ve learned this year, summarizing all six units, to include fiction and poetry.

Reading proficiency is the foundation for all learning and will continue to be one of our highest priorities. We will also emphasize comprehension and content literacy throughout the semester.

In addition, our classes will explore the creation of each genre through the writing process. Students will enhance their language skills by emphasizing critical thinking and logical development of ideas as they use the communication skills of reading, writing, research, and media literacy.

I will focus on everyone’s learning and preparedness to meet the challenges they will encounter in high school next year.

I will strive to provide a challenging learner-centered atmosphere and base classroom instruction on students’ academic and personal achievement. I am committed to helping all students achieve great success and am very proud of their hard work and accomplishments so far this year!

Please contact me at any time with your questions or concerns.
