When a student enrolls at S.T.E.P., we begin coordinating with the home campus to closely match their course schedule here with that in which they were previously enrolled. All coursework done at S.T.E.P. is credited work that is added to the students’ transcripts, including high school courses being taken by middle school students (Spanish, Algebra I, etc.).
FAQ
-
What classes will I take?
Every student at S.T.E.P. takes the appropriate level of English/language arts, math, science, social studies, PE and Service Learning. Additionally, middle school students take reading and an elective; high school students add two electives. If a high school senior has completed all the required courses in a core area, adjustments are made to ensure the student is on track for graduation.
-
What electives are available?
The most common electives are Art, Health, and Spanish, but several others are available. Please note that the availability of certain electives depends on when during the school year a student enrolls, and certain electives have prerequisites.
-
What if I did not pass a course or am missing credits?
If a student is behind in credits, a credit recovery course will take precedence over an elective. Recovery is self-paced through our Edgenuity program with teacher support. If a student works diligently, not only is it possible to catch up, but acceleration is possible as well!

I don’t want to go to school. Can’t I just take the GED test?
Although we do have a GED track, it is much more involved than simply taking a test (and actually, it’s 4 tests!). If you were not court-ordered to take the GED, you will continue in traditional courses unless the WCJS Treatment Team (Principal, Case Managers, Counselors, administration, attorney advocates) determine that GED is the right course of action for your unique situation. In order for the Treatment Team to consider you for GED, you must first be 17, showing work ethic in your traditional classes at S.T.E.P., and be at least a half-year behind in credits. If it is determined that you should take the GED, you will first participate in prep courses with S.T.E.P. teachers.
-
What if I have an IEP or 504 Plan at my home campus?
Students who receive accommodations, modifications, or special services through Special Education or Section 504 will continue to receive these on our campus. For students in Special Education, an ARD will be held within the first couple of weeks to ensure services are compatible.
-
Do you offer pre-AP or AP courses?
We are unable to offer pre-AP or AP credits on our campus, so you will be enrolled in the non-AP version of the course while here. Our teachers are able to increase the rigor in their courses to meet the needs of their students.

Can I graduate from S.T.E.P.?
Students who complete the requirements for graduation while enrolled at S.T.E.P. will graduate at their home campus. Your official transcript will come from your home campus as well.
