Broadway production of Newsies is coming to Georgetown’s East View High School
Fans of Broadway musicals will be delighted when a production of Newsies comes to Georgetown in January. The award-winning theater program at East View High School is the first in Texas to secure rights to the Broadway smash hit show.
Based on the real-life Newsboy Strike of 1899, the Disney musical tells the story of Jack Kelly, a rebellious newsboy who dreams of a life as an artist away from the big city. After publishing giant Joseph Pulitzer raises newspaper prices at the newsboys’ expense, Kelly and his fellow newsies take action. With help from a local reporter, all of New York City soon recognizes the power of these small and mighty newsboys.
“We’re incredibly excited to bring this show to Georgetown,” Jonathan Demitchell, theater director for East View High School, said. “We are also the first high school in Texas to secure rights to the show. It’s an underdog story that illustrates the tenacity of young people to stand up for what they believe is right, an inspiring story for our students.”
The show won’t go on for months; however, tickets are on sale now. Fans can purchase tickets at a discounted rate through October 31 by visiting www.EVHSTheater.com. Tickets are $12 for adults and $7 for students, teachers and seniors.
