GHS Orchestra’s Act of Kindness Featured in National Chick-Fil-A Campaign
Sometimes it’s the little things that make the biggest difference. In December 2018, Georgetown High School Orchestra made a big difference in their local community by doing a ‘little thing’ during the holidays at their local Georgetown Chick-Fil-A, located in the Wolf Ranch Town Center.
Every year, the Wolf Ranch Town Center hosts several Christmas and holiday events and the Georgetown High School Orchestra is invited to perform. Last year’s performance was rained out and the students were not able to play their instruments due to the inclement weather.
“I was bummed out it kept raining and we couldn’t play at Wolf Ranch so we went to Chick-Fil-A for breakfast,” viola student Maria St. Clair said.
While the storm was not letting up, an idea occurred to orchestra teacher Barbara Hughston. She asked the manager if her students could perform their concert inside for Chick-Fil-A customers. The manager agreed and the students played a variety of festive music to help everyone get in the holiday spirit.
“People were coming in just to watch us. It was really cool,” viola student Nikki Carey said.
The concert garnered lots of attention and was appreciated by all customers and employees. One guest submitted the gesture to the #TheLittleThings campaign to be considered for a national commercial - to share the story of how a small-town orchestra inspired its community through a small act of kindness.
“Who knows, maybe we inspired some little kids that day to learn to play an instrument,”
violin student James Gonzalez said.
They were not only considered, but selected to tell their story in New York City for a nation-wide commercial for #TheLittleThings Chick-Fil-A campaign. The commercial is airing now, and the quick-serve restaurant is excited to have the orchestra come back this year to perform again.
“Music brings joy to people and it feels really good to share that joy,” Carey said.
Weather pending, the orchestra will return to Wolf Ranch Town Center Saturday, December 14 at 4 p.m for a holiday performance. Following this performance, the orchestra will also go back to Chick-Fil-A and play carols at 5 p.m. We encourage our Georgetown community to stop by Chick-Fil-A to enjoy a ‘little thing’ this holiday season presented by the Georgetown High School orchestra.
