September Board Briefs
Board Briefs are monthly, high-level updates following regularly scheduled meetings of the GISD Board of Trustees.
Look for Board Briefs each month following the regularly scheduled meeting of the board. These updates are designed to help keep you informed on important activities and decisions in the district.
These briefs will be archived on our website so you can access them at any time. A video archive of GISD board meetings is also available on our website.
Board Receives Updates on COVID-19 Safety Measures, Instructional Procedures
Representatives from operations, support services and human resources updated the board of trustees on work being done in and outside of classrooms in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. First, the district launched a COVID-19 dashboard, reflecting weekly reports, lab-confirmed positive cases by campus and cumulative totals of COVID-19 cases in the district. The numbers on the dashboard are updated each time a case is identified, following notification of families or staff members directly affected. The dashboard is available at www.georgetownisd.org/COVID19.
Process maps for student and staff members were also shared with the board. Both process maps are regularly updated, according to guidance from local and state governments. The maps provide instructions on steps to take when a staff or employee is exposed to the COVID-19 virus. Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources Lisa Napper also shared the various leave options available to staff who are affected by COVID-19 personally, including Emergency Paid Sick Live, Expanded FMLA and Pandemic Leave.
Parents now have the opportunity to choose in-person or remote learning for the second nine-weeks grading period. Additionally, all remaining nine-week grading periods will be open to choose. The window will remain open until Oct. 4 and will open again before the third and fourth nine-week grading periods. Families may update their preferences in Skyward Family Access.
College, Career and Military Readiness Reports on Equity Work Progress
In July and August, GISD leaders worked through step one of the Equity Planning Process: Establishing our Institutional Why. To guide the continued work in equity, the group defined equity as follows: “Equity means every learner is inspired and empowered to fully develop their individual talents, gifts, and academic and social potential, no matter their race, gender, ethnicity, language, ability, family income, sexual orientation, or any other social factor.”
Now in step three of the process, “Develop an Equity Lens,” the department of college, career and military readiness launched a monthly equity newsletter, “The Power of Every.” The newsletter is shared monthly with the district leadership team, teachers and the community. You can catch up on the latest editions in ParentU.
Bond Construction Projects Continue
Executive Director of Construction and Development David Bieshevuel updated the board on the progress of projects funded by the 2018 bond. Classroom renovations have been completed at East View High School. The athletic wing renovation and addition at Tippit Middle School is nearing completion, with newly-completed gyms, locker rooms and showers. At Georgetown High School, progress continues on the secure walkway that links Georgetown High School to the Annex. The walkway is currently secured and usable, with electrical, security and fencing elements still in progress. Security upgrades are also currently in progress at eight campuses across the district. Visit www.georgetownisd.org/2018bond for more updates and photos of the projects.
