Next Week at Purl
We hope your child and family enjoys a wonderful three-day weekend! GISD schools and offices will be closed on Monday in honor of MLK Day. Our teachers have been discussing MLK as well as setting goals and the significance of this holiday. We are always striving to create authentic learning experiences that not only teach academics, but meet the skills of our learner profile and also address the social/emotional needs. What a great way to tie these skills together while also learning about a great leader in history!
On Tuesday, our 5th graders will be traveling to Tippit Middle School. The purpose of their field trip is to give students an opportunity to receive information about the electives that are offered at middle school. Students will be able to find out about classes in Fine Arts, Electives and PE by watching performances, touring classrooms and have their individual questions answered. Making the transition from 5th to 6th grade is an important step in a child's education. The elementary and middle school campuses are working together to ensure that students are fully supported and prepared for success.
Thank you to PTA for loving on our teachers with a treat cart last Friday!! PTA also supports students and teachers by rewarding reading and literacy with the Puma Reading Club. Did you know that students have access to read several books online using Reading A to Z? This website can be accessed through your child's class link. This single sign on application is used across GISD to give quick and easy acess to resources for both students and staff. Ask your child about Reading A to Z and ClassLink. Tablets, ipads, phones, chromebooks, and computers are compatible with this website.
We have two weeks left in our Box Tops competition in PE! Our PE department benefits from Box Tops and utilizes these funds to help purchase equipment as well as plan Field Day. Please send your box tops to school with your child - the class with the most box tops will earn a reward.
Thank you for communicating with teachers and office staff when your child is absent for a doctor's appointment or an illness. Notes are sent to the office or can be sent directly to our regisrar through Skyward Family Access. Last week we had 106 absences and 140 tardies. Our district has created an automated tardy letter similar to the letter sent home about absences. Being on time to school is SO important for our students because it can set the tone for the day - help us create a calm morning routine with the students by having them to school on time.
