In Case You Missed It: Great News in GISD Schools!
Congratulations to our September Teachers of the Month
We're proud to recognize our August Teachers of the Month from campuses within the district. The teachers who are recognized are commended for their teaching excellence and commitment to Georgetown ISD's vision, mission, and beliefs. Each month, campuses select a teacher to recognize for their hard work and dedication to our students. You can see more information and pictures of our teachers of the month on our website.
New Resources Available on ParentU this month
Starting today, parents can access new ParentU resources including:
- Tips for Supporting Literacy at Home
- Learn about Google extensions that help students improve their reading and writing
- 10 Tips from a Librarian: How to get your student interested in reading
Some of this month’s resources, including Google Chrome extensions, are free tools that support student learning online. Short videos show you how to access, install and use them.
Academic Help Desk Launched for Remote Learners
GISD is proud to offer additional support for remote learners who may need daytime, just-in-time academic assistance. An Academic Help Desk is now available Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 11:30 a.m. - 1 p.m. Students and parents may access this resource for help troubleshooting content-specific assignments, guidance navigating homework and troubleshooting in Google Classroom. The Academic Help Desk is available via Google Meet. Visit “Homework Help” at www.georgetownisd.org/students to access. Remember, students will need to be signed in to their georgetownisd.org accounts to access the links. Questions will be answered in the order they are received, and there may be other students in the chat at the same time.
It’s Not Too Late to Apply: Free and Reduced-Price Meals For Qualified Families
Your family may be able to receive free and reduced-price meals for your student(s), and we encourage you to review your eligibility status today. Even if you did not qualify in the past, the eligibility guidelines have been updated to account for job loss due to the COVID-19 pandemic. You can learn more about the criteria for free and reduced lunch and complete the application on our website. Those individuals filling out the application will need to provide the following information:
- Names of all household members
- Amount, frequency and source of current income for each household member
- Last 4 digits of the Social Security number of the adult household member who signs the application or, if the adult does not have a social security number, check the box for “No Social Security number”
- Signature of an adult household member attesting that the information provided is correct Categorical or Program Eligibility
Paper copies of the application may also be obtained at each campus or administration building throughout the district. You may also contact Jesse Marrujo, federal programs specialist, at 512-943-5000 x 7176 or firstname.lastname@example.org if you have additional questions.
If a household member becomes unemployed or if the household size increases, the household should contact the school. Such changes may make the children of the household eligible for benefits if the household’s income falls at or below the income eligibility guidelines.
Virtual Future Readiness Events Runs Through Saturday, Oct. 3
Live virtual and on-demand sessions run through Saturday, Oct. 3, giving students and families access to college, career and military options. Students in grades 6- 12 can visit with college representatives, more than 30 local businesses and a representative from every branch of the military through scheduled and recorded online sessions during the week. Our partnership with the Chamber of Commerce, the City of Georgetown and the Rural Capital Area Workforce Solutions groups has made this possible for our students. Manufacturing Day, Oct. 2, will be a part of this effort, and students will have access to incredible online 3-D tours of local manufacturing facilities and will be able to visit with those company leaders during scheduled virtual sessions that will take place in their CTE classes.
This video provides an overview of the week’s events and step-by-step instructions on how to participate.
Visit the Chamber website for more information.
