Spring STAAR and TELPAS Testing Information
In January, the Texas Education Agency announced students must be present at school, in person in order to participate in STAAR and TELPAS assessments this spring.
Georgetown ISD is committed to providing the safest environment possible for students and staff on our campuses, while taking the following into account:
- By federal and state law, all school districts must administer STAAR and TELPAS assessments. A full list of these laws is available at this link.
- Logistical constraints prevent the state from administering these assessments in remote or at-home settings.
- TEA has made a number of adjustments to help school districts provide a safe on-campus testing environment, including
- expanded testing windows
- An option to provide instructions remotely to those not testing (reducing the number of students on campus during testing days)
Some families may still not feel comfortable sending students to campuses for in-person testing due to health concerns. GISD respects your decision to continue to participate in remote-only instruction, knowing that students who do so will not be able to participate in STAAR or TELPAS assessments remotely. Remote students are still able to attend their home campus to take the STAAR or TELPAS tests.
Students in grades 3-8 who choose to not participate in STAR assessments will not be affected by promotion or retention decisions. However, please know that not participating in end-of-course assessments (EOCs) at the high school level does have implications for students. Under current law, students are required to perform successfully on EOCs to meet graduation requirements.
Families will receive more information from campuses soon regarding details for participating in STAAR and TELPAS assessments this spring including transportation options for remote learners who wish to report to campus for testing. Please reach out to your student’s campus if you have any questions regarding spring testing.
