GISD Culinary Arts Student Takes First Place in Cake Competition

Georgetown Independent School District is home to an award-winning Culinary Arts program, where students gain exposure to the restaurant industry, including food service operations and customer service, and potential career paths in the field of culinary arts. Along with in-class opportunities, culinary arts students often participate in meaningful activities and competitions outside of school. 

Amazing Cake Ideas is a blog that provides inspiration and guidance to cake decorators all over the world. Each year, they hold a competition known as the “Super Fantastic Cake Competition”, where they find cake designs that have been shared to the web and pull the most impressive ones to showcase in the competition. Among this year’s nominees was East View High School (EVHS) senior and Culinary Arts student Cailin Ross. 

Amazing Cake Ideas sought me out and entered me into the competition,” Ross said. “There were a ton of different entries from other cake artists, so it was exciting to be a part of it.”

The Super Fantastic Cake Competition ended on October 21, when Ross was announced as the winner with close to 8,000 votes for her two-tier masterpiece with an intricate unicorn design. Ross received recognition on the Amazing Cake Ideas website and a certificate that honors her accomplishment. 

“I have always loved baking at home,” Ross said. “I have been doing it with my mom and grandma ever since I was little, so it was cool to showcase what I have learned in this contest.” 

Ross’ passion for baking eventually led her to start her own business, Cece’s Bakery, which she runs through Facebook and Instagram. At the start of the pandemic, Ross baked cinnamon rolls from scratch during a peak of boredom. Her mother shared a post to Facebook asking if anyone was interested in buying the cinnamon rolls, and they sold out in 15 minutes. 

“It is amazing to see Cailin running her own business making cakes, pies, cookies, and many other desserts, all while balancing her dedications at school,” Chef Emily Jimenez, EVHS Culinary Arts instructor, said.” Somehow she manages to do it all and do it all very well.” 

Ross has been a student of the EVHS Culinary Arts program for four years, and over time, she has learned a number of priceless lessons. Ross is especially interested in the work she did while writing menus and creating mystery baskets. Through mystery baskets, students have a  limited amount of time to pull ingredients together to create a meal that they are assigned upon arrival. 

Mystery baskets have helped me learn how to create recipes on a whim, and writing a full menu with pricing is crucial exposure I needed for a future career in culinary arts,” Ross said. 

After high school graduation, Ross plans to attend Texas Tech to pursue a degree in Restaurant, Hotel & Institutional Management. Ross dreams of eventually opening up her own bakery-cafe with a limited menu of coffee and baked goods. 

“I know that if Cailin opens her own bakery, she will be successful because of her passion and dedication to her work,” Chef Jimenez said. “She is the type of student who dreams big while having the work ethic to accomplish those dreams.”

Ross competed with EVHS culinary arts in the culinary team competition at FCCLA Regionals in January of 2021, where she took first place in the Cupcake Battle. She then moved on to the state competition in April, where she placed 5th for her mermaid-themed cupcake display. 

In November, Ross made the 2022 culinary competition team and will be competing at the FCCLA Regional Competition this coming January.
