Sun City Kiwanis Promotes Literacy in GISD Schools
Before Georgetown ISD began Spring Break 2020, and ultimately a closure due to Covid-19, students at Pickett Elementary School enjoyed some in-person storytime with one of the district’s long-time community partners, the Sun City Kiwanis.
The Sun City Kiwanis provides a literacy program to GISD and every semester, the Kiwanis visits elementary schools to read to students in pre-k through second grade. Students not only get to listen to the book, but the Kiwanis also gifts physical copies for students to take home and enjoy any time.
This year, students enjoyed the following books:
- Pre-K: Disney/Pixar Board Book & CD Treasury Box
- Kindergarten: We are NOT Lost
- 1st-Grade: Disney’s Big Hero 6
- 2nd-Grade: Star Wars: A Leader Named Leia
By the numbers, the Sun City Kiwanis reads to 3,200 students every year and gives more than 6,000 books to GISD students. In addition to the financial investment, the countless volunteer hours and the presence of a “grandparent” role model for these young students is priceless.
Sun City Kiwanis is a global organization of volunteers dedicated to changing the world, one child and one community at a time and we are so grateful to have them as a dedicated and supportive partner at Georgetown ISD.
