135-ACRES OF LAND PURCHASED TO ACCOMMODATE FUTURE GROWTH
A new parcel of land purchased in the western area of the school district yesterday will accommodate future growth, Superintendent Fred Brent, shared in his update to the board.
The 135-acre tract of land lies west of DB Wood Road and south of Lake Georgetown and Cedar Break Park Road. The southwest portion of the district is an area we’ve been watching for some time. Demographer reports, along with housing development in areas like Wolf Ranch and Water Oak, show we could need new schools in that area in the next 5-10 years. The land was purchased with funds from the 2018 Bond package and has the capacity to support an elementary, middle and high school site in the future.
In order to build new schools on the property, the district would need the support of taxpayers in future bonds to secure the needed funds.
You can view drone footage of the property on our YouTube channel.
BOARD APPROVES ADDITIONS TO COURSE CATALOG
Mathematics, career and technical education, fine arts, and electives were approved as additions to the 2020-2021 GISD course catalog. The district will gauge student interest in the following courses before exploring budget options:
- Mathematics: Independent Study in Math, Algebraic Reasoning
- CTE: Small Animal Management, Equine Science, Vet Med Apps/Ag Lab and Field Experience, Commercial Photography
- Fine Arts: Middle School Dance I
- Electives: Student Leadership
BOND 2018 CONSTRUCTION PROJECTS CONTINUE
Executive Director of Construction and Development David Biesheuvel provided an update to the board on the progress of ongoing 2018 bond projects. Updates included the construction of Wolf Ranch and Williams elementary schools, the additions at Ford Elementary and East View High schools, and more.

BOARD APPROVES PURCHASE OF NEW VIDEO SCOREBOARD FOR ATHLETIC COMPLEX
The board approved the purchase of a new video scoreboard display to replace the 11-year-old scoreboard at GISD’s athletic stadium complex.
The new video display will be mounted on the current scoreboard tower. It will offer new features, including an entirely electronic HD, 16:9 ratio video screen. This will allow for custom advertising, and most importantly, a reliable scoreboard for GISD athletic events. Upgrading the video display is an important step in maintaining a world-class athletic complex for GISD students and visitors.
The existing scoreboard display will be moved to the practice field, and the district aims to complete the installation of the new video scoreboard in time for the state soccer tournament next spring.
